New biz on the block:
Whisky & Wine Off 69: 1321 2nd Avenue. There is whisky, wine and bubbly a’plenty at this new 2nd Avenue business. You can buy everything you need to mix drinks like a pro, the staff is knowledgeable and friendly, and the selection is terrific; this is not your ‘typical liquor store’. They are planning monthly Mixology Mondays with some of NYC’s top mixologists and will hold various tastings!
The Meatball Shop: 1462 2nd Avenue. Nothing hits the spot quite like a meatball sandwich, especially one from The Meatball Shop, where there are plenty of specialized balls & sauces to choose from! The owners (and brains behind the balls), Daniel Holzman & Michael Chernow, first met growing up on the UES, so they are excited to bring their popular chain of meatball shops back “home”.
Vinus and Marc: 1825 2nd Avenue. Frank Locker, owner and entrepreneur, states, “I grew up on the UES in Yorkville since I moved here from England in 1983 and have watched the neighborhood change. Vinus & Marc is meant to celebrate the neighborhood — and provide a welcoming place to enjoy drinks and delicious seasonal food while having great conversation. We’re excited to serve the people who live and work here — and also to introduce this peaceful plot of Manhattan to others who may never have heard of Yorkville or thought to venture uptown.”
Il Salumaio: 1731 2nd Avenue. Specializing in hams, salamis, cheese, condiments and groceries imported from Italy. According to the New York Times food blog, you can get pasta dishes made fresh, along with sandwiches layered on magically delicate focaccia baked in the pizzeria’s wood-burning oven. Visit them on Facebook here!
Vella Restaurant and Wine Bar: 1480 2nd Avenue. Vella is serving wine, craft cocktails, and bistro-y food. According to press materials, the menu’s designed by consulting chef Filippo Dina, an alum of Telepan and Café Boulud, and features small plates, charcuterie, and larger entrées like steak, lamb chops, and salmon cioppino. It serves dinner daily, opening at 11 a.m. Friday to Sunday. 212-335-0456
BEET: 1619 2nd Avenue. Executive chef Hassan Belamine (AKA Chef Ben) hails from Morocco where his mother taught him traditional Moroccan cuisine and sparked his love of cooking. Eventually that passion took him out of law school and to the U.S. Today he is rooted in the French culinary tradition. Check out his delicious menu at Beet! Enjoy live jazz on Wednesdays from 7pm – 10pm and Sundays from 6pm – 9pm.
DTUT: 1744 2nd Avenue. Back by popular demand, the much loved DTUT has reopened its doors in a new space on the Upper East Side. The downtown inspired cafe/lounge is a place for everyone to kick back and relax. Whether you’re here for a coffee in the morning or a glass of wine or craft beer at night, they want this to be your neighborhood place. They want you to be comfortable, happy, and at home the minute you walk through the door. Bring your kids, bring your friends, bring your date. They have something for everyone!
BurgerFi: 2nd Avenue and 81st Street. More than just a burger joint, they have a frozen custard station with tasty toppings, hotdogs, beer and more. Great summer foods that go perfectly with their outdoor seating. For complete menu, visit: burgerfi.com
